A shaded grove, still and patient

Patient by design.

Pokok Capital was built around one conviction: that financial understanding, developed carefully over time, serves people better than rushed decisions or second-hand summaries.

A school for the long view.

Pokok Capital was founded in Singapore in 2017 by a small group of financial practitioners who had each spent years working with clients in their forties, fifties, and sixties. The name comes from the Malay word for tree — specifically the idea of a tree as something that has taken a long time to grow, offers real shelter, and does not rush to bear fruit.

The founders had a shared observation: many people approaching retirement had accumulated a reasonable amount of wealth, or at least stood to inherit or receive CPF payouts, but had not had the opportunity to develop a structured understanding of what they actually held, or what it meant. Financial advice was available — but advice and education are different things. Advice tells you what to do. Education helps you understand why, and whether the advice you receive is well-suited to your own circumstances.

Pokok Capital set out to offer that education. Not through online videos or self-paced modules, but through small, in-person cohorts with working materials and quiet discussion. The curriculum was developed with Singapore's specific financial structures in mind — CPF, HDB, SRS, MAS regulations, and the legal framework for estate documentation in this jurisdiction.

Since the first cohort in early 2018, the school has taught several hundred participants across its three programmes. The format has remained essentially unchanged: small groups, careful pacing, tangible outputs. Growth has been deliberate; the school has no intention of becoming large.

What we try to get right.

Independence

No financial products are sold here. No affiliated advisers, no commission arrangements. The school has one income: course fees. That arrangement is the foundation of everything else.

Local specificity

All content is developed for Singapore. CPF structures, Singapore estate law, HDB mortgage mechanics, and MAS-regulated instruments. Material is reviewed annually to remain current with local administrative and legal practice.

Measured pace

Programmes run over five to eight weeks, not two days. Understanding financial structures takes time. The cohort format allows questions, revision, and reflection between sessions.

Tangible work

Each participant leaves with a working document: a household balance sheet summary, an investment workbook, or an estate documentation folder. The output is practical and usable — not decorative.

Discretion

Participants share information about their own financial circumstances within the cohort setting. That is treated as a private matter. Personal disclosures are never used in case studies or marketing material.

Practitioners as teachers

Instructors are selected because they work in the field they teach. The estate course is taught by an estate planning lawyer. The investment course by a portfolio practitioner. The household finance course by an experienced financial planner.

The people who teach.

Each instructor was selected because they have direct professional experience in the subject they teach.

Singapore Law Society Guidelines

Estate documentation instruction follows the Law Society of Singapore's guidelines for public legal education.

Data Privacy

All participant data is handled under Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). We collect only what is needed for course administration.

Annual Curriculum Review

Course materials are reviewed and updated each year to reflect changes in CPF structures, Singapore tax legislation, and MAS regulations.

Post-Cohort Review

Each cohort concludes with a structured feedback process. Responses are reviewed by the programme director and inform the following term.

Understanding what you hold, and what to do with it.

Singapore has a distinctive financial landscape for households approaching retirement. CPF structures, HDB flat ownership, Supplementary Retirement Scheme accounts, and the MAS-regulated investment environment create a framework that is quite different from what overseas financial education materials address. Pokok Capital programmes are developed within this specific landscape.

The household finance course addresses the balance sheet that most Singaporean families carry: property (often an HDB flat), CPF savings distributed across Ordinary, Special, and Medisave accounts, insurance policies, and a range of savings and investment holdings. Understanding how these components interact — and where gaps or imbalances may exist — is the foundation of sound household planning.

The investment course addresses mid-life portfolio construction with realistic expectations: SGX-listed equities, Singapore government bonds, dividend allocations, and the behavioural factors that tend to lead investors astray during market volatility. The emphasis is on documentation habits and understanding, not on timing markets or chasing returns.

The estate documentation course works through the legal and administrative instruments that every Singapore household should have in place: a valid will, CPF nominations reviewed and updated, a Lasting Power of Attorney registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, and a coherent household reference folder that family members can read and use if needed.

Pokok Capital does not offer financial advisory services, manage investments, or sell insurance products. The school teaches. That narrow focus is what allows our instructors to speak plainly, without the pressures that affect those whose income depends on client transactions.
